The Character Leveling System

9/1/2015

Okay.  So the previous update (Ruleset 1.1 of last month) introduced a modification to the leveling system that invariably brushes up with the status & stature of existing, older characters.  The goal of this entry is to provide a formula for adjusting those characters' Rank to the modified system.  Given that the change was meant to improve the pace of character leveling be prepared to see a marked increase in Rank and Reputation for characters that have been around for awhile.  Those players who don't fancy the idea of skipping over levels are free to pass on the conversion, allowing their characters to begin leveling at the new rate, and we understand some will feel this way.  But please do be aware that the formula really only works if the conversion is done sooner rather than later, which will make more sense when you see the way it's implemented.

Consider also that with the number of adventures and amount of experience some of these characters have achieved, they may just deserve it...

Alright, so right away the first question is what characters does this effect?
Well, basically any character that has been part of a successful Story at any point all the way up through Ruleset version 1.0.9 (August 2015).  Under the revised system their Rank and Reputation are both lower than they ought to be... even more so for characters with prodigious experience.

Before delving into the Character Sheets it would probably be good to verify that your Victory phase booklet is indeed the most current version.  The old Rank structure looks like this...

Meanwhile, with perhaps an old Character Sheet in hand, here's our method for determining the adjusted Rank and Reputation for legacy characters.  We're going to aim at identifying three key numbers using the information already on the character sheet.  For the example why don't we imagine an experienced character with a Rank of 27 and 5 Hero Awards.  Ready then?
Step 1: Multiply Hero Awards times two and subtract that from the Rank

            The formula, Rank - (Hero Awards * 2) = x
            The example, 27 - (5 * 2) = 27 - 10 = 17

Step 2: Multiply the result above times two

            The formula, x * 2 = The First Number
            The example, 17 * 2 = 34

Step 3: Multiply Hero Awards times three for The Second Number

The formula, Hero Awards * 3 = The Second Number
            The example, 5 * 3 = 15

Step 4: Add the First and Second numbers

The formula, First number + Second number = The Third number
            The example, 34 + 15 = 49

Step 5: Subtract somewhere between one and five from The Third Number
This is where a bit of guesswork is needed on a per-character basis.  What this number is attempting to account for is the approximate number of times this particular character came away from the Victory phase with no Victory badges, meaning that they would have (under the revised leveling system) only increased by one Rank on that particular game.  Try to recall how many times this character found themselves in such a position, and of course in most cases we're having to settle for an educated guess... which we estimate will probably range from one to five instances depending, in part, on the average group size the character has historically joined up with.  Large groups might increase the number of instances.

We want to encourage all players to be a little forgiving here as there very likely is no precise (flawless) way to convert older Characters, yet the collective sentiment we may agree is that they're deserving of it none-the-less.  All those adventures and bread baking and heroic deeds!  Alright, so...

The formula, Third Number minus 1~5 = Adjusted Rank
The example, we guess three instances so 49 - 3 = Adjusted Rank of 46

And there it is.  The adjusted, or more 'correct' Rank for this character is now 46 from 27.  The previous Reputation was "Veteran" whereas the very probably more 'correct' Reputation is now "Agent of Feonora."
